Only an orthodontist can decide if a dental retainer is right for your child. Most children are instructed to wear a retainer for a period of time after their braces are taken off. If your child has gaps between his teeth or a tongue thrust (a condition in which the tongue pokes through the teeth when talking), he may need to wear a retainer.
