How do I know if I my child needs a clear plastic dental retainer?

Only an orthodontist can decide if a dental retainer is right for your child. Most children are instructed to wear a retainer for a period of time after their braces are taken off. If your child has gaps between his teeth or a tongue thrust (a condition in which the tongue pokes through the teeth when talking), he may need to wear a retainer.

Children with temporomandibular disorder (TMD), a condition in which the teeth don’t meet when the jaws are closed, or those who grind their teeth may benefit from a dental retainer.
