How are Invisalign braces fitted?

Gregory J. Jorgensen, DMD

Invisalign aligners are not braces at all but clear plastic aligners that are custom made to fit every tooth in both your upper and lower arches. These aligners are constructed from digital models derived from either very accurate impressions or optical scanners. Once the digital models are constructed, your orthodontist directs Invisalign how he wants the teeth moved and a series of aligners are produced that sequentially carry out those movements. The aligners are just another way that your orthodontist can deliver forces to your crooked teeth so that they can get straight.

Invisalign braces are fitted through a custom mold, copy or impression of your teeth taken by your dentist or orthodontic specialist. The copy of your teeth (both upper and lower) is registered in addition to your bite and sent to a computer processing facility that digitally-scans your teeth into the Invisalign system.

Invisalign braces fitting takes about an hour with your doctor. Prior to this appointment a thorough exam will be done to verify you are a candidate for orthodontic treatment.

After an exam with your dentist or orthodontist, he or she will determine if you are a good candidate for orthodontic treatment using Invisalign appliances. If you are a good candidate, you will need to have a special impression or mold of your teeth made. Or in some offices you may have a 3D scan taken of your teeth. These impressions are usually taken with a material called PolyVinyl Siloxane, or PVS. This material is much more accurate than a conventional alginate impression and will also last much longer.

Once your records are taken (photos and x-rays) these are sent to Align Technology along with your PVS impressions or 3D scan. The technicians at Align technology set up your case within their software. The dentist or orthodontist will then direct the technicians on how to move your teeth. From your doctor's instructions your personalized Invisalign aligners are then constructed and shipped to your doctor's office.

Your doctor will usually deliver 2-5 sets of aligners to you. They will make sure that the aligner is fitting on your teeth as it is supposed to, and give you more sets to take home and wear per their instructions.
