How does orthodontic high pull headgear work?

There are two mechanisms by which headgear works. If it is worn full-time (18+ hours), it can actually shift the teeth. If it is worn just at night (more common), it's effects are more orthopedic. Think of it as a parking brake on the upper jaw. It's effect is to restrain the growth of the upper jaw while the rest of the face grows around it.
