What are the symptoms of thrush (oral candidiasis)?

People with diabetes may experience signs and symptoms of thrush, (oral candidiasis; caused by the fungus Candida albicans), which can be identified by red or white patches inside the mouth. It can involve the tongue, inside of the cheeks, and/or back of the throat. It causes a burning feeling which may make it difficult to swallow. Thrush has been known to occur in diabetics because of higher than normal glucose levels. Thrush may occur if there is a decreased flow of saliva, which allows the fungus to grow. Thrush can also develop as an adverse effect of taking antibiotics. The antibiotics kill the good bacteria that keeps the growth of the fungus under control. Thrush also occurs under dentures. Thrush can be diagnosed by either a physician or a dentist, and will usually resolve by taking a prescribed antifungal medication.
