Balanced salt solution (BSS, BSS Plus) is safe for use in children, adults and older persons. There have been reports of intraocular lens changes in persons with diabetes when balanced salt solution is used for ocular irrigation during surgery. Persons with diabetes should talk with a doctor about the risks and benefits of using this balanced salt solution.
