What is the correct way to receive ranibizumab?

The correct way to receive ranibizumab (brand name Lucentis) is by an injection into your eye by a doctor, usually on a monthly basis. Ranibizumab is not a medicine that you can take on your own.

You will visit your doctor's office once a month (or less often -- you and your doctor will decide on a schedule). The doctor will clean the area around your eye carefully to reduce the risk of infection. He or she will then give you a numbing medicine so you do not feel pain during the injection.

After the doctor injects the ranibizumab, he or she will check your eye. This process will be repeated at each visit. Your doctor will keep checking to make sure that ranibizumab is working for you and helping to treat your age-related macular degeneration.
