Pegaptanib (Macugen) is prescribed to treat the eye disease wet age-related macular degeneration. Common side effects of pegaptanib include mild gastrointestinal distress (diarrhea, upset stomach, nausea, vomiting); joint pain; cough; dizziness; headache; burning; or painful urination. Tell your doctor if these side effects persist or become severe.
More serious side effects include an allergic reaction (skin rash, itchiness, hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, tightening of the chest, or swelling of the face, lips or tongue), eye symptoms (discharge or drainage, painful, irritated, or red eyes) or changes in vision (blurry vision, light sensitivity, or seeing floaters or flashes of light). If you experience these symptoms seek immediate medical attention.
