How does oxymetazoline interact with other medications and food?

Over-the-counter oxymetazoline nasal sprays can interact dangerously with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO inhibitors), including isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar) and tranylcypromine (Parnate). In rare cases, oxymetazoline also may interact with: caffeine found in beverages and foods, bromocriptine (Parlodel), furazolidone (Furoxone), guanethidine (Ismelin), indomethacin (Indocin), methyldopa (Aldomet), phenothiazines, including chlorpromazine (Thorazine), fluphenazine (Prolixin), perphenazine (Trilafon), prochlorperazine (Compazine), mesoridazine (Serentil), thioridazine (Mellaril) and trifluoperazine (Stelazine), theophylline (including Theo-Dur, Theochron and Theolair), tricyclic antidepressants, including amitriptyline, amoxapine (Asendin), clomipramine (Anafranil), desipramine (Norpramin), doxepin (Sinequan), imipramine (Tofranil), nortriptyline (Pamelor), protriptyline (Vivactil) and trimipramine (Surmontil). Oxymetazoline also may interact with other medications, herbs and supplements. Make sure your doctor knows about any such substance that you take.
