How does hypromellose treat dry and irritated eyes?

Hypromellose is found in many over-the-counter eye drop products and prescription medications. Its primary purpose is to moisturize and relieve the eye by covering the eye in a protective film. In prescription formulations, it is also used to protect the eye during eye surgery and examinations. Other eye drop products, like tertrahydrozoline (found in Visine), may also help with eye problems but do so in different ways, such as reducing the swelling and irritation in the eye by constricting the blood vessels in the eye.
