Hydroxypropyl cellulose is a prescription eye insert that belongs to a class of medications called artificial tears. It is placed in the eye to treat dry, irritated eyes. It also is used to treat decreased corneal sensitivity and keratitis. It works by helping maintain eye moisture, which protects the eye from infections, injury and the symptoms of dry eyes. Hydroxypropyl cellulose is often prescribed when the solution version of artificial tears does not relieve symptoms. Hydroxypropyl cellulose is also found under the brand name Lacrisert.
