Is carboxymethylcellulose safe for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding?

Over-the-counter artificial tear products that contain carboxymethylcellulose are not considered harmful to a fetus or breastfeeding baby. This eye lubricant is not likely to pass into breast milk. Still, ask your doctor to make sure you can use these products while you are pregnant or nursing.
