Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) can be serious. Because the condition interferes with normal academic and social functioning, a child with ODD can fall behind at school and have difficulty relating to peers and adults. A child with untreated ODD may eventually develop substance abuse problems, conduct disorder, and delinquency. The family dynamic can also suffer. Because it can be frustrating to care for a child with ODD, parents may struggle to cope.
