What should I avoid while taking methadone?

While taking methadone, you should avoid drinking alcohol or taking other narcotic drugs, whether legal or illegal. Avoid smoking, eating grapefruit, or drinking grapefruit juice, since they decrease the effectiveness of the methadone. If you take methadone at home, you should take extreme care with storing this medication. Because methadone is often mixed with fruit juice, children have ingested this drug and died. Avoid driving or any activity that requires alertness. You should avoid becoming pregnant or breast-feeding while taking methadone as dependency on methadone can be passed from mother to fetus or nursing infant.
