What are the risks of taking morphine?

Morphine belongs to a family of drugs called opioids. These medications relieve pain. However, opioids are habit forming if not used properly. To avoid becoming dependent on morphine, follow all of your doctor's instructions. Taking morphine can cause breathing difficulty, even at modest doses. This risk is greatest in the elderly. Morphine may cause other side effects, such as very low blood pressure and gastrointestinal problems (such as constipation, which may be severe).
