Is codeine safe for my child to take?

As a general rule, children can take codeine to relieve mild to moderate pain. But there are exceptions. Children younger than 16 should not take combination products containing codeine and promethazine. Promethazine is an allergy drug that may cause severe breathing problems in children. Always supervise your child's use of codeine products and keep containers where they can't reach or find them.
