How soon after starting Butrans will my symptoms improve?

Butrans (buprenorphine) is a patch that delivers a powerful opioid painkiller on a steady basis. Each patch lasts seven days; then you remove the old patch and apply a new one. When you first start to use Butrans, your doctor will work carefully with you to find the right dose -- one that provides adequate pain relief with the fewest side effects. This may take a few days. Generally, if your patch isn't controlling your pain by the third day, your doctor will increase the amount of medicine. After that, you should have continuous pain relief.
