How does morphine interact with other medications?

Products that contain alcohol interact with morphine by increasing the severity of certain side effects like sleepiness, disorientation, loss of memory and trouble breathing. Morphine may interact with a medication called alvimopan and increase certain side effects associated with alvimopan. You should not take alvimopan if you have had morphine within seven days of your first doses of alvimopan. Use of antidepressants, antipsychotics, barbiturates, benzodiazepine and antihistamines should be monitored closely in people taking morphine.

The risk for increased sleepiness, disorientation, forgetfulness and trouble breathing, increases when these medications are combined with morphine. Muscle relaxants may interact with morphine and elevate the possibility of side effects from both treatments. Talk to your doctor before using a muscle relaxer while taking morphine. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) that are often prescribed for treatment of depression may interact with morphine causing serious side effects.

You should not take MAOIs for at least two weeks before using morphine. The use of other opiate drugs, such as oxycodone or hydrocodone, should only be combined with morphine under advice of a doctor. Combining other narcotics with morphine can intensify its effect and heighten addiction. Sleep aids should be used with caution while taking morphine. The interaction of morphine and sleep aids can result in extreme fatigue and difficulty breathing. Do not use any other prescribed medications, supplements or over-the-counter medications without first talking to your doctor.
