It may not be safe to take the pain medication Rybix ODT (tramadol) if you're already taking an MAO inhibitor. MAO inhibitors are a type of antidepressant that includes isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar) and tranylcypromine (Parnate). Combining Rybix ODT with an MAO inhibitor appears to increase the risk of seizures. This combination of drugs also may cause a life-threatening condition known as serotonin syndrome, which can cause hallucinations, heart trouble, loss of coordination and coma, among other side effects. Be certain your doctor knows that you're on an MAO inhibitor before you take Rybix ODT.
