What medication should I avoid if I have a bowel obstruction?

Stacy Wiegman, PharmD
Pharmacy Specialist

Do not take the painkiller Avinza (morphine) if you have paralytic ileus, a partial or complete bowel obstruction. Avinza can prolong the obstruction and worsen the condition.

You should never take the pain medication MS Contin (morphine) either. MS Contin can prolong the obstruction and worsen the condition. Make sure your doctor knows your complete medical history before you take MS Contin.
