Can I use Avinza if I have an anxiety disorder?

You can use the painkiller Avinza (morphine) if you have an anxiety disorder, as long as you are not taking anti-anxiety medications that interact dangerously with Avinza. You shouldn't take Avinza if you use a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), such as tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), selegiline (Emsam, Eldepryl), procarbazine (Matulane) or isocarboxazid (Marplan). In fact, you shouldn't take Avinza until at least two weeks have passed since your last dose of an MAOI. These drugs increase Avinza's potency, which can cause severe side effects and even a fatal overdose.

You should also let your doctor know if you're using any of the following types of drugs because some may also interact with Avinza:

  • tranquilizers, sedatives, barbiturates or sleeping pills
  • muscle relaxers
  • street drugs
  • tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline, amoxapine (Asendin), clomipramine (Anafranil), desipramine (Norpramin), doxepin (Adapin, Sinequan), imipramine (Tofranil), nortriptyline (Aventyl, Pamelor), protriptyline (Vivactil) and trimipramine (Surmontil)
  • antipsychotics
  • antiseizure drugs
  • antinausea medicines
  • anesthetics
  • blood thinners
  • antihistamines (cold and allergy medicines)
  • beta blockers
  • buprenorphine
  • butorphanol
  • nalbuphine
  • pentazocine
  • cimetidine
  • quinidine

It's important not to drink alcohol in an attempt to relieve your anxiety while you're on Avinza, or use alcohol-containing medication. Alcohol can cause your body to absorb Avinza too rapidly, greatly increasing the amount of the drug that gets into your blood. This cause severe, potentially fatal, side effects.
