What are the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids if I have bipolar disorder?

John Preston, PsyD
Psychology
Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids have been found to positively affect mood in people living with bipolar disorder, which may mean that a deficit in these biochemicals is related to the onset of depressive episodes. Furthermore, omega-3 supplements are more effective with depressive symptoms than with mania, because they elevate mood.

Although the studies in this area are in the early stages, the research suggests that omega-3 fatty acids might be an effective part of a comprehensive treatment plan for bipolar disorder. Findings from this newest research reinforce the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for people living with mood disorders. Some of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids include fish, such as mackerel, sardines, herring, and salmon, as well as fish oil supplements, flaxseeds, walnuts, canola, soybeans, and their oils. Generally, a dose of 2 grams per day is recommended.
