How can I stay healthy if I'm overweight?

The surprising fact is that just being overweight won't do you much harm if you do not make poor diet choices and if you do not have the side effects of obesity. That is, if you eat the right foods and are still fat but don't have high blood pressure, arthritis, disordered sleep patterns, a distorted self-image, disordered lipids, or a tendency toward diabetes and are physically active, the extra weight wouldn't be an aging problem. However, for most people who are overweight, the extra weight will cause complications. Also, obesity is usually caused by food choices that are less than optimal. In fact, choosing the right foods, even if you are overweight, tends to reduce the likelihood of health complications. So, being fat but fit and eating plenty of fruit, fiber, fish, tomatoes, and healthy fats tends to keep your blood pressure down, normalize your blood sugar and blood lipids, and help you avoid many of the complications of obesity that lead to aging.
