How does obesity affect health in the United States?

Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD
Cardiology (Cardiovascular Disease)
Scientists and doctors say that the current epidemic of obesity in the United States is taking a terrible toll on our health. Obesity increases the risk for many diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers, to name just a few. It can be a challenge to tease out exactly how much obesity contributes to these and other medical conditions. But according to some estimates, obesity is responsible for 5% to 15% of deaths in the United States each year. In fact, researchers say that the growing societal problem of obesity will erase the health benefits gained from the drop in tobacco use. Of course, obesity can take a terrible toll on a personal level, too. If you're having trouble managing your weight, talk to your doctor and consider taking part in a balanced weight-loss program.
