How does obesity affect lifespan?

Severe obesity -- having a BMI (body mass index) of over 40 -- can shorten lifespan by 14 years. Researchers say that people who are severely obese are at risk of dying younger than normal-weight people because obesity increases the risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
