Oral rehydration salts (ORS) should not be taken by a person who has a blocked bowel or difficulty urinating. If vomiting is severe, the oral rehydration may not be effective because it cannot be absorbed before it is vomited. In this case, an intravenous solution may be needed. If a person has difficulty swallowing or is unable to drink fluids, an intravenous solution may be needed.
