Who should not receive KCl in D5W?

If you have an allergy or sensitivity to potassium, dextrose or any other ingredient in KCl in D5W, you should not receive it. This solution should be used with great care or not at all in people with kidney problems or failure, congestive heart failure, high blood volume, diabetes, a urinary tract obstruction, potassium retention or high blood potassium levels. You may be advised against administering KCl in D5W to infants with low birth weight. Pregnant women should discuss the risks with their doctor before use.
