What is potassium chloride?

Potassium, an element and an electrolyte contained in many foods (bananas, oranges, tomatoes, potatoes), is necessary for good health. Most people get enough potassium by eating a healthy diet. Sometimes, illness or deficiency can cause your potassium level to drop too low. In these cases, your doctor may suggest supplementation. Potassium chloride is a type of potassium salt supplement that is prescribed by your doctor that is used to treat low potassium levels. Available forms of potassium chloride include effervescent tablet, extended-release capsule, extended-release tablet, oral solution, powder, and solution for injection.
