What does dextrose treat?

Dextrose is used to treat hypoglycemia or low blood sugar levels caused by high levels of insulin in the blood or insulin shock. Dextrose can also be used as a source of carbohydrate calories for patients whose oral intake is restricted or inadequate to maintain nutritional requirements. Dextrose should be administered slowly to prevent hyperglycemia or high blood sugar levels.
