What should I know about Plasma-Lyte 148 and Dextrose Injection?

Plasma-Lyte 148 and Dextrose Injection is a solution that provides you with fluids, electrolytes and calories when you need them. It is given to you through your veins by an IV. If you have an allergy to corn or are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not receive Plasma-Lyte 148 and Dextrose Injection, as not enough research has been conducted to know about its safety in these populations. People with certain medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, renal (kidney) insufficiency or failure, hyperkalemia, sodium retention with edema, metabolic or respiratory alkalosis, diabetes mellitus, potassium retention and hepatic (liver) insufficiency, should be careful when using Plasma-Lyte 148 and Dextrose Injection. Additionally, you should use Plasma-Lyte 148 and Dextrose Injection with caution if you are on corticosteroids or corticotropin.

Administration of Plasma-Lyte 148 and Dextrose Injection can cause overhydration, pulmonary edema, congestion, infection at the injection site, blood clots, extravasation (a condition in which urine leaks and collects in other body cavities), fever and diluting the electrolytes in your blood. In premature infants, too much of Plasma-Lyte 148 and Dextrose Injection can result in too many electrolytes in the blood and even hemorrhage.
