How can I minimize the side effects of Venofer?

To minimize the side effects of Venofer (iron sucrose) start by talking to your doctor about your concerns. Small changes in the way Venofer is administered can lower your risk for certain side effects.

For example, although a dose of Venofer can be injected in 2 to 5 minutes, your doctor may dilute the medication and administer it more slowly as an intravenous infusion over 15 minutes or longer. This can help prevent a drop in blood pressure for some patients.

The healthcare provider administering Venofer will also monitor you closely during the injection and for some time afterward for side effects or symptoms of an allergic reaction (such as shock, loss of consciousness or collapse). If such a reaction is going to occur, it usually does so within a half hour or so after the injection.
