Should I call my doctor if oral rehydration therapy does not help?

If you or your child have taken oral rehydration therapy and seen no improvement or worsening symptoms after 24 to 48 hours, the diarrhea may be severe. It may require treatment with fluids given through your veins. Call your doctor if you or your child has diarrhea that has lasted three or four days, as well as if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • frequent vomiting
  • severe stomach pain
  • blood in the stool
  • fever
  • dehydration
