Many fast food chains are starting to offer healthy choices on their menus to attract more health conscious consumers.
New federal requirements for nutrition labeling at restaurants are slated to be released this fall, 2012. These guidelines will require that restaurants with 20 or more locations must post the calories on their menus and menu boards.
For example, McDonald's currently offers apple slices, fat free milk, and grilled chicken salads to help consumers order menu items that are aligned with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010, they will also be testing additional healthier foods to be potentially launched in 2013.
Here are some options that could be tested soon at a McDonald's near you:
- More seasonal fruit and vegetables options, such as blueberries and cucumbers, during peak seasons;
- Additional produce side options and grilled chicken choices for Happy Meals;
- The McWrap featuring fresh vegetables starting at 350 calories; and
- New breakfast choices, including an egg-white breakfast sandwich on an English muffin made with 8 grams of whole grain.
