Which is better for weight loss -- orange juice or milk?

While fruits are generally felt to be healthy, fruit juices may not be the best choice when trying to lose a few pounds. For example, given the option between a glass of orange juice or skim milk at breakfast, the juice might not be the better choice. Skim milk has about 80 calories, while orange juice has about 100.

The main contribution to calories in the milk comes from protein and simple sugars, while almost all of the calories in the orange juice come from simple sugars. Thus, skim milk is the preferred product for weight loss. If you like orange juice, however, you can choose "light" options that have about half the calories as regular juice. These may be fortified with calcium and vitamin D, in amounts comparable to that in milk, making this an excellent choice with fewer calories, even when effective calories are taken into account.
