The arthritis drug Arthrotec contains two active ingredients: diclofenac and misoprostol. Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and like other NSAIDs, it increases the risk of ulcers and gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. The misoprostol in Arthrotec is there to help protect the stomach lining and reduce acid production. Arthrotec is intended only for people with arthritis who are at special risk of developing GI problems.
