Common side effects from salicylic acid treatment are mild and tend to diminish as treatment progresses. These include skin irritation or stinging, and the treated area may become red, flushed, dry and warm to the touch. Peeling also may occur. Serious side effects that warrant a call to your doctor include: hearing changes (hearing loss or hearing a buzzing sound), extreme weakness, stomach upset, diarrhea, rapid breathing, headaches, fatigue, dizzy spells and confusion. Allergic reactions include: itchy skin, swollen lips or tongue and a rash. If you experience an extreme allergic reaction, seek medical help immediately.
