Are there serious side effects of piroxicam?

With nearly any medicine you take there is a risk of serious side effects, and piroxicam is no exception. Congestive heart failure, in which the heart does not pump well, is a rare but very serious effect that can happen with medicines like piroxicam--drugs that are categorized as NSAIDs. Heart attacks, high blood pressure and dangerous skin reactions are also serious, but uncommon, side effects of piroxicam. Some people have had abnormal levels of chemicals, called electrolytes, in their blood; others have had liver damage or blood cell disorders. While the list of possible serious effects is long, the key point is that these effects are quite rare. When you start taking piroxicam, your doctor can talk to you about symptoms that should prompt you to call them or to go to an ER; these include unusual bleeding, a rapid heartbeat or yellowing of the eyes or skin.
