What increases my risk for stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma?

Stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma can strike anyone, regardless of risk factors. However, older people and those with immune systems not functioning at their full strength are most susceptible to developing the disease. Immune systems can be weakened by certain viruses like HIV, the hepatitis C virus, and the Epstein-Barr virus, or by certain medications, such as those given after receiving an organ transplant. Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that causes certain types of ulcers, has also been linked to increased risk. Research is ongoing into whether certain chemicals like those used in weed and insect killing sprays, increase the risk of stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
