With an unknown cause, and the disease affecting all ages, there is no sure way to prevent stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. With suspected but unconfirmed risk factors tied to weed killers and insecticides, it is probably a good idea to limit exposure to those kinds of products. This particularly applies to people over 60, whom non-Hodgkin lymphoma most often affects. Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is thought to lead to suspecptibility to non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and precautions against infection should always be taken. The bacteria H. pylori, which has been linked to peptic ulcers, has also been connected to non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but it is an extremely common infection and difficult to avoid (most people with H. pylori have no signs or only mild signs of infection). Studies are also looking into obesity as a possible risk factor, and in light of that possible link leading a healthier lifestyle may help prevent the disease.
