What is cryotherapy for genital warts?

Cryotherapy for genital warts is the removal of warts from the genital area by freezing them, using liquid nitrogen. This treatment must be done by a doctor skilled in the therapy. It should not be attempted at home. Overtherapy may result in complications and undertherapy may not work to remove the warts.

When cryotherapy is performed correctly, the liquid nitrogen can disintegrate and destroy genital warts, but because the warts are caused by a virus, they may recur. The liquid nitrogen can cause some pain upon application, but doctors can apply a topical or injected anesthetic to the area prior to applying the liquid nitrogen to minimize the pain. Blistering in the area may also occur with this treatment, and multiple applications may be necessary to eradicate the warts.
