What happens during cryotherapy wart removal?

Christopher Chiodo, MD
Orthopedic Surgery
A quicker but more painful option is to have your doctor remove the wart by freezing it, a procedure known as cryotherapy. The frozen tissue then dies and falls off, like a scab. No anesthetic is used in cryotherapy. There will be no pain while the wart is actually frozen, but you may feel some pain for a short time as it thaws. Sometimes, you may have to go a second time, if the entire wart wasn't removed or if it grows back. Your doctor may also perform outpatient surgery, excising the wart with a scalpel under local anesthetic. Another procedure uses a carbon dioxide laser to remove the wart, again with a local anesthetic.
