What is diphenhydramine?

Diphenhydramine is the active ingredient in the brand-name product Benadryl. It is an antihistamine used to treat symptoms of allergies and the common cold. These may include runny nose, water eyes, rashes, hives, itching, cough and sneezing. This drug also may be used to treat Parkinson's disease, motion sickness and insomnia.
