How do nail disorders affect the body?

Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD
Cardiology (Cardiovascular Disease)
Nail disorders can cause pain and discomfort in the area around the nail and can lead to complications that affect other parts of the body. For example, fungal infections in the nails can spread to the skin, and bacterial infections from ingrown toenails can spread to the bone. If you have a nail disorder, it's best to get an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan from your doctor.

Nail disorders can affect the body by causing the nail to raise from the nail bed and in some cases detach completely. Nail disorders can also affect the body by inhibiting the growth of the nail. Infection stemming from a nail disorder can spread to the skin surrounding the nail, which leads to pain and inflammation. Nail disorders may also affect the cuticle, causing it to wither and detach.
