Who is most at risk for muscular dystrophy?

Because all types of muscular dystrophy are caused by genetic mutations, people with certain genetic factors are at the highest risk. If one or both of your parents have a type of muscular dystrophy, or if either of your parents is a carrier of a mutation that causes muscular dystrophy, then you are at a higher risk. Depending on the type of disease, certain ethnic backgrounds are more commonly affected. So, for instance, people of French-Canadian heritage are more at risk for oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy. Some types of muscular dystrophy affect one sex more than the other-for instance, Duchenne muscular dystrophy affects mostly young boys-so sex and age may be risk factors for certain muscular dystrophies.
