What are the symptoms of oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy?

Symptoms of oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy usually don't appear till a person is over 40 years old. The first symptom is usually droopy eyelids, which is caused by weakness in the muscles surrounding the eye. Another primary symptom is difficulty swallowing, which can often lead people to choke when eating or drinking. Over time, the muscle weakness may spread to other parts of the body, most commonly other areas of the face, and the upper thighs, hips, and shoulders.
