How does surgery treat oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy?

Although it's generally not the first treatment tried, surgery can help treat some of the symptoms of oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy. For people who experience frequent choking due to difficulty swallowing, a surgical procedure on the throat called cricopharyngeal myotomy may help reduce choking. For especially severe cases, surgical placement of a feeding tube may be the best option. People who have severely droopy eyelids can undergo a surgical procedure called a frontalis sling that will help relieve the vision impairment and social awkwardness caused by very droopy eyelids. It's important to talk with your doctor to determine if surgery is the best treatment option for you.
