Is muscular dystrophy life-threatening?

Depending on the type of muscular dystrophy, the disease can be life-threatening. Most of the time, if muscle weakness caused by muscular dystrophy affects the heart, lungs, or other vital organs, these complications may be life-threatening. Some types of muscular dystrophy may lead to death in a person's 20s or 30s, or even during childhood, depending on the severity of the symptoms. For the most part, proper treatment may help people with muscular dystrophy live longer, fuller lives.
