Myotonic dystrophy is inherited, so having a parent with myotonic dystrophy puts a person at risk for developing the disorder. Parents pass along the defective gene for myotonic dystrophy to their children in what is called an autosomal dominant pattern. Genes inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern can be inherited from either the mother or father-so a person with an affected parent has a 50 percent chance of developing the disorder.
