What are the different types of muscular dystrophy (MD)?

There are a number of different types of muscular dystrophy, each with different symptoms, causes, progression, and related complications. All types of muscular dystrophy are caused by genetic mutations that affect muscle proteins, but the exact mutations and results vary depending on the type. Since different types affect different genes, the symptoms of the diseases vary as well. Types of muscular dystrophy may be named according to the affected muscle areas, the genetic cause, or the doctors who first discovered the diseases.
