Medications are used to treat myotonia, or the inability to relax the muscles. In addition, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can alleviate muscle pain, and immunosuppressive drugs can prevent damage to muscle cells. People with myotonic dystrophy can also develop diabetes or mild diabetic symptoms and may require medication to stabilize their blood sugar.
