Why did my doctor tell me to see a dentist before I start taking denosumab?

Your doctor wants you to have a dental exam because some people get jaw problems when they take denosumab. You may be more likely to get these jaw problems if you have pre-existing tooth or gum problems or if you have dentures (false teeth) that don’t fit well. Plus, if you will need to have any dental surgery, such as having a tooth removed or getting a tooth implant, it should be done before you start taking denosumab. Talk with your doctor or dentist about how denosumab can affect your mouth and jaws.
